These never-before-displayed works make up two of the three pieces in the Ash Flower series and the first NFTs Zhang Huan has made available for sale. They are the most recent examples of his use of ash as a unique medium throughout his career. In Ash Flower, the viewer is invited to explore what Zhang Huan describes as “a hallucinatory world where the is immortal, emotions are eternal, and life blossoms,” wherein the ashes contain the collective souls, feelings, and positive energy of the universe. Today, the tradition of burying ashes in a mountain or spreading them in a body of water has become less practiced and Zhang Huan finds it important to dignify these remains in the form of art. His work preserves this cultural practice, and thereby the wishes and prayers themselves, stating that no matter what they are, they should never be stifled.
