The collection Naha, which in Sepedi means "open field," is about Itumeleng Makgakga's explorations in Eislebene, Polokwane, South Africa, the place of her maternal grandmother's birth. a place with rich, largely forgotten memories, histories, customs, and lineages. The artworks boast technical levels that draw directly from the natural beauty of her native country, with terracotta oozing into some of the intricacies. Gomora's background in Johannesburg is portrayed using simple linear techniques in contrast to those. a town with a mixed population of cultures that emanates a stylish chaos. In her portraits and abstract illustrated stills, Makgakga chronicles her experiences from both worlds in her present reality, in addition to the passed-down customs and shared family stories from her maternal side. By challenging individuals to discover more about their identities and origins through the illustrations, Makgakga invites viewers to contemplate.
