The inspiration behind this piece comes from one of the only Czech words to be imported to the English language — robot. This term was coined by the famous Czech writer and playwright, Karel Čapek, in his seminal play, R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots), written in 1920 and premiered in 1921, which marked the first use of the word. Čapek defined a robot as an artificial human made of organic matter with a different chemical composition. Rennerová’s work, appropriately, is made using AI tools and depicts a humanoid figure, reimagining Čapek’s creation in a contemporary style, perhaps closer to what he imagined than ever before. This piece is sold in the edition of 100 works.
