In the "Sleeping Muse", a movingly alive portrait of an actual woman, the Baroness Frachon, is given timelessly abstract form. Her features are stylized, flattened, close to not being, as the self is seemingly in sleep. The eyes of the "Sleeping Muse" may be shut, but her ear is open to the sounds of the world The way I saw this piece was more like a moment in time rather than a physical object, a moment that can expand as long as one needs: to breathe, to think, to contemplate, to just exist. I wanted this looping artwork to give life to the way the sculptor intended it to be: peace descending into the soul of the viewer. The pastels make you calm, the bright colors make you present, while the gold handle bar along with the idea of a precious object exhibited in a museum pedestal reminds us that being at peace is a luxury in life, that we should treasure every time we have the chance to do so. Constantin Brâncuși was considered one of the most influential sculptors of the 20th-century and a pioneer of modernism. He was a visionary, being called the patriarch of modern sculpture, best known for the uniquely reductive, modernist visual vocabulary he used in sculptures to depict a wide variety of subjects, such as fish, birds, and couples kissing. His works can be seen in the permanent exhibition at MOMA.
LUME Studios brings 'HOMAGE' to NYC to showcase Accelerate Art & Art Bees Gallery's tribute exhibition to Constantin Brancusi. Featuring 47 digital artworks made in conversation with Brancusi's legacy, curated by Claire Silver & NONE32X32.
This work was curated by Claire Silver for Homage, an exhibition organised by Art Bees in partnership with Accelerate Art.
The act of homage—of creation, in conversation with the work of another artist—reminds us that art is a living thing. Even Pleistocene cave art and the megaliths of Stonehenge still inspire; it is only natural that some of the world’s most innovative digital artists have joined together to celebrate the work of Constantin Brancusi with their own original creations.
Organised by Art Bees in partnership with Accelerate Art and hosted by the Constantin Brancusi Center of the Craiova Museum, HOMAGE will feature works from forty-eight digital artists, taking inspiration from Brancusi’s work and life.
The curators for this exhibition were NONE32X32 and Claire Silver with NONE32X32 curating the 18 featured artists and Claire Silver, the 30 artists who responded to an Accelerate Art open call thread on Twitter.
